How much does the GED cost in South Africa?
The official GED test fee in South Africa, what else to budget for (GED Ready, preparation, retakes) and how to keep the total cost down.
All guides · Reviewed 7 October 2026
Short answer: The official GED test in South Africa costs 90 US dollars per subject, or 360 US dollars for all four, paid to GED Testing Service through GED.com. On top of that you pay for the GED Ready practice test in each subject and for whatever preparation you choose. Fees are charged in dollars, so the rand amount changes with the exchange rate.
The official test fee
GED Testing Service lists the South African test fee as $90 USD per subject, which is $360 USD for all four subjects. You pay when you book each subject on GED.com, so you can spread the cost by writing one subject at a time.
Because the fee is in US dollars, your bank converts it to rand on the day you pay and may add its own foreign-transaction charge. Check the current fee on the official page before you budget.
Other costs to plan for
- GED Ready. In South Africa you must score at least 145 on the official GED Ready practice test in a subject before you may book that subject. GED Ready is bought on GED.com and is charged separately for each subject.
- Preparation. A course, books or a tutor. Our self-study courses are a once-off price per subject with a year of access; see courses and pricing.
- Retakes. If you do not pass a subject, you pay to write it again.
- Getting there. Travel to the test centre, and delivery if you order printed copies of your credential.
How to keep the cost down
- Do not book until your practice results are comfortably above the pass mark. A failed attempt is the most expensive mistake.
- Write one subject at a time, strongest subject first, so that each fee is spent on a test you are ready for.
- Use free material first. We have free sample lessons in all four subjects and free practice with the GED question formats.
- Buy only the subjects you need help with.
